This is an established joint project of University of Queensland and the Friends of Toowong Cemetery. Excavations are designed to recover the buried headstones from the North Brisbane Burial Grounds (1843-1875) deposited at Toowong Cemetery in the early 1930’s, and you are invited to help excavate and transcribe the finds.
The monumental inscriptions recovered in this excavation provides additional information absent from the public record. Pre-civil registration birth dates and places, employers and friendships recorded are preserved as part of Brisbane’s social and historical record. These records are made available to family and local history societies.
