NSW: RIP The Oxford Tavern: What Lay Beneath?

Event Details

The National Trust of Australia (Illawarra Shoalhaven Branch) presents a National Archaeology Week event.

Presenters: Dr Iain Stuart (JCIS) and Alex Beben (Biosis Research)

Supported by singer/songwriter Peter Langstaff.

The redevelopment of the Oxford Tavern site opened a window into the history of downtown Wollongong, with a view back to the 1830s.  Archaeological excavation of the site revealed a series of footings belonging to earlier phases of hotel buildings, and the wall of the temperence hall next door, along with a mysterious nineteenth century drain. Now, eight months after the dig, the finds have been analysed and archaeologists Dr Iain Stuart and Alex Beben are ready to tell their part of the Oxford Tavern story.
