This is a day of hands-on archaeology at the outdoor teaching facility (ATARC) at the University of Queensland. The activities include digging, mapping, sieving, sorting and identifying finds, making and firing pots, casting bronze axes and swords, making and using stone tools, ancient weaving, throwing spears and a quiz. All ages are welcome. The ATARC is located on Sir William Macgregor Drive at the St Lucia Campus, close to the bus station near the University Lakes and the Alumni gardens. It is building 56J and has a large sign out the front facing the river. Parking along Sir William Macgregor Drive and the University Campus is free on weekends.
Please wear enclosed shoes, a hat and sunscreen, and bring along some water. There is a modest cost of $5 per person to cover the cost of materials.
Previous Open Days have been well attended and great fun for all the participants! There is truly something for everyone – so please feel free to circulate this email among friends and family.
